Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neuropsychiatric condition that affects children, adolescents and adults. This disorder manifests itself through symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity, varying in intensity from one individual to another. Being a complex condition that has been the subject of intense research over the years, aiming to understand its origins, clinical manifestations and impacts on various spheres of life, with emphasis on education. ADHD represents a challenge for the school population, affecting academic performance. The symptoms of ADHD, including concentration difficulties, impulsivity, hyperactivity, disorganization and low self-esteem, negatively impact academic life. This article provides a comprehensive review of ADHD, focusing on the clinical aspects of the condition and how it affects academic life. Diagnosing ADHD is a complex process that involves clinical criteria, interviews, questionnaires and individualized assessments. Treatment for ADHD is multidisciplinary, including behavioral therapies, psychoeducation and, in some cases, medication. The impacts of ADHD on academic life are evident, with students experiencing difficulties concentrating, procrastination, impulsivity and disorganization. However, with adequate support, it is possible to minimize these impacts and promote academic success for students with ADHD. Educators, healthcare professionals, and family members play a critical role in providing this support and developing strategies to address the academic challenges associated with ADHD. In summary, this article provides essential information about ADHD, highlighting its complexity and its effects on education.
