Prevalence of depression in Porto in 2017/2021

Introduction: Depression, also referred to as major depressive disorder, is characterized as an illness manifested through recurrent depressive episodes, lasting a few months to a year. Several factors, such as sex, insomnia, life stressors, absence of a spouse, low level of formal education, insufficient income, substance abuse, lack of social support and reduced satisfaction with life, are associated with a greater susceptibility to predisposition the disease. Furthermore, a significant correlation is observed between the prevalence of depression and the situation of dependent elderly people. Objectives: This study aims to estimate the prevalence of depression in the population of Porto Nacional in the period between 2017 and 2021. Methodology: This is a cross-sectional prevalence study with a descriptive approach, using data from the database in the public domain of the Ministry of Health SIHD/SUS/DATASUS. Expected results: It is anticipated that this study will provide a deeper understanding of the etiology, clinical manifestations and the epidemiological profile of the individuals investigated, allowing better guidance from bodies dedicated to the health care strategy. Such knowledge is essential to enable effective monitoring of these patients, aiming to reduce the damage associated with this pathology. Furthermore, it is expected that the results can support the creation of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and groups aimed at valuing life and psychological support.
