Applicability of Forensic Dentistry: Literature Review

Abstract

Introduction: Human identification has been addressed by several studies, mainly in the criminal area. There have always been many methods that have been created, developed and improved in the search for establishing individual identity. In this process, there is support from Dentistry, which has been an area of significant importance for identifying an individual. Objective: the present study aimed to analyze techniques used by Forensic Dentistry in human identification. Methodology: A systematic review of the literature was carried out based on the periodic databases, PubMed, Google Scholar and Scielo, whose time frame was between the years 2017 and 2022. After collection, excluding the articles, 20 remained for the discussion. Results: Forensic dentistry has a lot to contribute to the process of human identification, however there is still a need for greater encouragement in the training of specialized professionals in the area. Final Considerations: There is also a need for more forensic research, especially regarding the development of technological tools that assist in this process.
