The use of psychotropic drugs in primary care has intensified in recent decades, becoming a phenomenon of increasing relevance for public health. Thus, this study aims to describe the factors that contribute to the increased use of psychotropic drugs in primary care through a literature review. This research is a narrative literature review. The search for scientific articles was carried out in the following electronic databases: PubMed; SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online); LILACS (Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences); Google Scholar. Studies published in the last 05 years, written in Portuguese and/or English, were included. A total of 15 (fifteen) publications were selected in this study. From the literature review carried out, it was found that the increased use of psychotropic drugs in primary care is related to a multiplicity of interconnected factors, ranging from structural aspects of the health system to sociocultural and economic issues. Among the main factors identified, the following stand out: the medicalization of social problems, the overload of primary care professionals and the lack of provision of mental health services, such as psychological counseling and non-pharmacological therapies. The influence of a hegemonic biomedical model was also observed, which favors drug interventions to the detriment of broader and more integrated psychosocial approaches.
